Games / Shadows is a work commissioned by Dutch clarinetist Theo Gerris. His passion for abstract art has motivated me to write this piece in which I describe a fictitious primitive ritual inspired by three paintings by the American painter Jackson Pollock. This fiction intertwines the three paintings (Guardians of the Secret, Composition with Oval Forms and The Flame) in a discursive way, thus recounting this magical ritual of fire.
The first movement, The Gentils, introduces pagan believers who will invoke the spirit of the flames. The second movement, Incantation, is the very spell of invoking fire. Finally, the third movement, Ignis Fatuus, represents the dance of the spirit of fire and the possession of the gentiles.
